Surviving Isolation

As we sit amidst the chaos and uncertainty of a worldwide pandemic I can’t help but contemplate the universally felt feeling of loss. As we all suffer through the overwhelming emotions that come with lockdowns and quarantine, we are faced with a deeper realization that we often so easily take life’s simple pleasures for granted.

Such tasks as grocery shopping and meeting up with friends have since become distant memories we now cling onto. Ever hopeful of their timely resurrection, we realize just how important enjoying simple pleasures are. So often we become comfortable, stagnant, and even complacent with our lives, forgetting to appreciate precious moments as they arise. Typically counting down the days until our next vacation, slugging along while praying to make it to the weekend, always looking ahead and making plans, we constantly try to rush into a future that may never come.

That has in fact been one of the most common things I have heard and felt regarding the wonderful first 6 months of the year 2020. Sounding so futuristic and advanced in numbers many were expecting 2020 to be this amazing year filled with wonder, magic, and authenticity. Now that it is upon us we sit in hopeful curiosity, quite uncertain of what the rest of the year will bring, even still, we remain stuck on possibilities of the future, ignoring our existence in the present.

Sitting, waiting and hoping for our future to arrive, for this all to end, for everything to go back to normal already, we miss out on all the opportunities that exist before us. Overly focused on how to make what is ahead great we stumble on the present, continually taking it for granted instead of using this down time to pause and reflect on our lives. When we had the opportunity to travel and move about freely we stopped ourselves, anticipating putting it off until tomorrow because we just knew that tomorrow would come. Now that tomorrow has arrived into today, we wish we would have taken more time to celebrate with our loved ones, or had gone outside one last time. Ultimately, wish we hadn’t taken such precious moments for granted.

So as we sit here, hoping that today is our last day of isolation, confusion, and uncertainty, I remind us to take a moment to appreciate all that we do have. While it is so easy to focus on what we lack, the more we focus on what we have the more fulfilled we will be. As we continue to give our energy and attention to areas of lack we feed our doubts and confusion thus providing a space for more heaviness to grow. It is when we take a stand against such thoughts and instead choose to cultivate abundance and prosperity, even in the spaces we feel it is depleted, that we are revitalized and can better connect with our sense of perseverance. As a nation and as individual people we have suffered through hard times before. Often unsure of how we were going to make it out and through to the other side, we have survived. Survival is our nature, so remember this as these isolating times challenge your will.

“If all you did was just look for things to appreciate you would live a joyous, spectacular life.”
